The Eagle

In Roman-ruled Britain, a young Roman soldier endeavors to honor his father's memory by finding his lost legion's golden emblem (IMDB).

As I have stated before, we are geeks for Medieval. As I have also stated February was a slow movie month and nothing coming out really excited us. This movie looked at least somewhat capable of entertaining us but the lead actor, Channing Tatum has never been a big winner in our book so this movie was placed on the BAD movie list.

We went into this movie expecting a disaster and only witnessed a mild fender bender.

This was your typical restore family honor story. The protagonist is on a quest to restore his father’s honor by serving in the military and seeking to find the golden emblem that was supposedly lost at his father’s hand. As I said the story wasn’t anything unique or extraordinary but what impressed us was the cinematography and special effects. The movie looked genuine and transported you to early England. You couldn’t help but feel that the Black Plague would be knocking at your door. There were some spectacular wide shots of northern England that really transported you there and increased your involvement in the movie. If not for the acting and overused plot, this would have been an amazing movie. Despite that, this movie still came out on our GOOD list.

I am Number Four

John is an extraordinary teen, masking his true identity and passing as a typical high school student to elude a deadly enemy seeking to destroy him. Three like him have already been killed ... he is Number Four (IMDB).

Due to the lack of good movie selections for February, this movie was placed on Mr. L’s GOOD list. With the possibility of being a good SciFi action movie we made the long journey to the theater.

This movie was WB hits the big screen for us. There was nothing creative or spectacular about it. There were attractive young actors with super powers and that is about it. It had your common movie mistakes with a few plot wholes and ho hum special effects. Mrs. C found the movie entertaining on a basic level of eye candy and the fact that there was no dead space (you didn’t find yourself asking when the movie would end). Overall this movie didn’t hit a cord with us, it wasn’t bad and it definitely was not good. So with that said this movie is MEH.

The Mechanic

The Mechanic follows an elite hit man as he teaches his trade to an apprentice who has a connection to one of his previous victims (IMDB).

Anything with explosions, car chases, and action/fighting is usually good in our book. Being Jason Statham fans for this very reason (name a movie of his that doesn’t have at least one of those elements) this movie peeked our interest. For that reason Mr. L gave this movie a pre-rating as a GOOD movie.

After going to this movie and running it through our rating system, we were not disappointed.

We knew we would like this movie based off our history with Jason, but there was actually some really good acting by both Ben Foster and Jason Statham. There wasn’t anything special about the story line, special effects, or cinematography – it was your typical shoot ‘em up, action packed film. Overall it was entertaining and enjoyable to watch. This one still came out as GOOD in our book.

Season of the Witch

According to IMDB Season of the Witch is about 14th-century knights who transport a suspected witch to a monastery, where monks deduce her powers could be the source of the Black Plague.

We are total geeks when it comes to anything Medieval or that could be reinacted during a session of D&D, so this movie looked like it could have some potential. The main caveat for us was that Nicholas Cage is the main actor in this movie. We do not usually like his movies and this really did not look like a good role for him. For that reason Mr. L gave this movie a pre-rating as a BAD MOVIE.

After going to this movie and running it through our rating system, we were pleasantly surprised.

Despite our initial misgivings, this movie was actually pretty good. The story line was unique and had good follow through. The special effects and cinematography were nothing special but still done very well. The main issue with this movie was the black hole that is Nicholas Cage’s acting, consuming all good actors in his way (Ron Perlman did a great job). Overall this movie was entertaining and well done. If you don’t hate Nicholas Cage then this should be a good movie for you.
